But that’s not to say they’re the brightest bulbs. The checkpoints are more forgiving and the friendly AI seems better. I actually enjoyed Big Red One more than the previous console exclusive, Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Unlike Call of Duty 2, Big Red One does not feature regenerating health so you do have to be careful and can replenish health by finding health kits in the environments. The run and gun action is frequently broken up by set pieces to keep things interesting. The environments are linear and you’re always told where to go, what to do, and how to do it. You’ll be doing a lot of running and shooting and very little thinking. In fact, it’s more of the same but with a different set of missions, basically. If you’ve played any of the prior games, Big Red One will feel very familiar. Adding an additional layer of cinematic charm to the experience is the voice cast which is comprised of some notable talent including Mark Hamill and several actors from the Band of Brothers miniseries. The game conveys the cinematic-style action the series is known for and throws in actual footage from the war at the end of each chapter. But Big Red One only follows the Americans, specifically the 1st Infantry Division, nicknamed “Big Red One”, and covers their efforts in North Africa and Europe, including the invasion of Sicily, landing on Omaha Beach, and crossing the Siegfried Line. In typical Call of Duty fashion, Big Red One lets the player participate in historical World War II battles. For this review, I played the Xbox version, specifically the Collector’s Edition which comes with some extra content and interviews. Developed by Treyarch and High Voltage Software and published by Activision, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One was released for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in November, 2005. The month after it came out saw the release of not only the Xbox 360 port but also a spin-off title for the previous generation of consoles. It delivers the same kind of action-packed gameplay as its predecessor but expands the formula with more open-ended environments and introduces regenerating health. Multiplayer games that support as many as 16 players are available for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2.Call of Duty 2 is one of my favorite World War 2 shooters. The ability of players to move, shoot, and meet the goals that a commanding officer provides before the start of each mission will determine how successful they are. They will do so by utilizing a variety of vehicles, such as tanks, jeeps, armored cars, and half-tracks, to complete these objectives. Players will be tasked with recreating the victories achieved during World War II across various land, sea, and air missions in Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. They will fight through the game as a team in Fighting First and be affected by the loss of friends they suffer on the battlefield. Players will begin the game as a private new to war in America’s most legendary infantry division, which was given the nickname “Big Red One” for the distinctive patch they wore on their uniforms. This is consistent with previous Call of Duty games. Amidst the frantic, heavily scripted, first-person action, the primary focus is on the characters and the drama between them. Players will again engage in combat during the Second World War in the second installment of the Call of Duty series for consoles.
